Art Nouveau
Art Nouveau
Nouveau is an artistic movement in European and American art, which began to develop at the turn of 19th and 20th century. The Art Nouveau was a response against academic tendencies and imitation of the ancient art and also a protest against the factory mass production.
An ambition to the stylish unity of art was an essence of Art Nouveau, thanks to integration of action in different fields, with particular reference to the handicraft, the interior design, sculpture and the graphics.
In individual countries this avant-garde artistic movement took different names: in Germany - Jugendstil, in France - Art Nouveau, in Great Britain - of Modernisms Styles, in Italy - Libertà.
There are five distinctive features for the Nouveau art: the asymmetry, curved line and the distinct outline using flat colourful stain, often with light pastel colours, as well as the diversity of applied materials and finally the decorative art coming to world of the nature, but sometimes straight out following the example of forces of nature.
The colours in Art Nouveau are subtle and muted and include pastels.
Walls are decorated with floral wallpaper or plant patterns. The materials used in Art Nouveau are stained glass, hardwood, and iron. Art Nouveau is nature-inspired and eco-friendly as it allows use of hardwood and organically painted wallpaper.
For me Art Nouveau is not as fascinating as Art Deco, however Deco style was influenced by Nouvau’s form of decorative art. From my personal point of view Nouvau looks too disordered and is lacking functionality and simplicity of Deco style.
Bauhaus
State Bauhaus/German Modernism
The school of Bauhaus is one of the most iconic and important facilities of the twentieth century. Founded by german architect, Walter Gropius who was the leading representative of functionalism and also Bauhaus principal.
There were three faciliities in three different german cities, Weimar, the Dessau and Berlin. Students who have studied in these schools attenteded special course, which involved learning about forms, materials and colours. A course would last six months and afterwards students have finished three years of workshops which included: wall painting, interior design, sculpture, metal and wood.
Once finished the course, student s would achieve one of the highest forms of eduction within wide range of skills. Apart from functionalism, which became a solid contribution in the area of designing space and objects, architects and other artists of Bauhaus have raised different personal concepts, often deviating from commonly acceptable level of understanding.
I perticularly like this style because of its rational and functional background.
The artists of Bauhaus were able to produce simple yet very functional designs which inspire designers and many artists up until this day.
Art Deco
The Art Deco Movement
Art déco was a style in art used in architecture, painting, graphics and in the interior design, spread in the years of 1920-1940.
The name comes from French, art décoratif;decorative art. Deco style, was also known under many different names such as: style 1925, modernisms style, ultramodern style, twenties style, jazz styles, zig-zag moderne.
Deco style found its influences in different design movements such as Art Nouvau or Cubism where the nature motifs and excessive ornamentation popular from Secession were kept, but discarded its flowing organic shapes and pastels for more symmetrical, expensive materials. The movement was known to be accesible mostly for the wealthy as the materials used were rare and expensive.
Geometrically stylized and functional objects in the Deco style have been rarely mass-produced, unlike other artistic movements, Deco had usually a character of the refined, elegant works of art, made from natural, often of expensive materials such as silver, ivory, linked sometimes with artificial and modern materials like Bakelite or chromed steel, such materials were affordable only for the elite.
In decorative art, Deco designers reached for Egyptian motifs in combination with classical, geometrical forms, often showing acts of women, animals, leaves and rays of sunshine.
Throughout the early twenties, first world war, second and years after, Deco Movement had was widely seen around the globe.
Examples of Deco architecture stand until this day and are a magnificent example of the perfectionsim that was achieved by combining functionality and artists skill of creating beautifully decorated interior, furniture or building.
This design movement has perticularly interested me because of its simple, yet very eye catching style, which I think, because of so many influences Deco style has taken, including: Art Nouvau’s ornate decorations, but limited to simple geometry and also German Modernism functionality.
I have ecountered Deco for the very first time during gameplay of the game Bioshock, which took a lot of influence from this movement, especially the architecture as well as interior design such as chairs, tables, walls and bar counters.
