Total War
The Total War series are
real time strategy games set in different historical periods, ranging from rise
and fall of the Roman Empire to medieval conquests across Europe. The game
combines both strategy and tactical elements, allowing players to plan out
their battle by setting appropriate formation, choosing units and morale
upgrades. Total War series is one of the best war simulators due to the amount of
small details that have been put to make the game feel both entertaining and
realistic. The first Total War game was published in the year 2000 and seven
more titles have released thus far.
However there are some
historical inconsistencies in the game such as unit types which never really
existed, weaponry and armour which are incorrect according to history facts,
yet the game has a lot of fans and is still being active as a series.
The game contains a flexible editor allowing players to create their own modification of the game. Various mod’s are based around popular films, books, games and TV series such as Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings or Warhammer Fantasy universe.
Medal of Honor
Medal of Honor is one
of the popular first person shooter series, based around World War II.
The player finds himself to be a soldier of either American or English army
fighting against Nazi regime. Missions in medal of honor remind of those from
World War II, such as the fight at the Omaha beach.
Game is fast paced and
entertaining, however it does not fully simulate soldier’s profession as
Americas Army does; it combines game play and the war theme very well to
entertain its players.
Medal of Honor games started off as a World War II
shooter series, joining the massive genre of war games and finding itself rivaling against another game developer publishing their own series, Call of Duty.
Both developers of each game
decided at some point to switch to a modern warfare, risking a loss of fans and
money but hoping to gain large profits from a refreshing change among their
series.
This change appeared to be successful and brought both companies huge
profits. Medal of Honor was originally developed by Dreamworks Interactive in
1999 and it is now owned by Electronic Arts.
America’s Army
America’s Army is an American
soldier training and shooting simulator, designed by American Army in order to
find new recruits. The game itself is a first person shooter and shows all the
aspects of soldier’s life from the training exercises to the real battleground.
The game can be both entertaining for all the fans of war game shooters, as
well as quite persuasive as it was intended when first designed.
Americas Army is unlike
any other first person shooters such as Call of Duty series, where the player
respawns upon death and regenerates health after short period of time. When joining
multiplayer in Americas Army players, have to work in teams just as a squad of
soldiers would in real life in order to fulfil the objective.
Whenever a player dies
in Americas Army he stays dead for the rest of his current multiplayer match,
which makes the simulation even more real and for players to understand how
easy it is to get killed on the real battlefield. The first official version of
America’s Army game project was released July 4th, 2002 and 26
versions of the game have been released thus far.
Wolfenstein 3D
Wolfeinstein is a first
person shooter game, set in World War II period, where the player takes control
over American spy, B.J. Blazkowicz, in order to infiltrate German Nazi castle
Wolfeinstein and defeat the Third Reich. The game has set some basic standards of first
person shooters, as it was the first one to be released in 3D. However, the game HUD,
resolution and most importantly gun placement are a big difference compared to nowadays
games.
Mainly because it was a first big attempt for First Person Shooters and
the computer hardware wasn’t as good as these days, but the game helped define
the genre of RUN – and – GUN games. Wolfenstein was first released in May, 1992
on Microsoft’s early operating system, DOS.

Age of Empires
Age of Empires is a real
time strategy game that recreates various historical events by taking the
player throughout different historical periods. From Stone Age up to European
colonization of Americas, the player can explore both economic and military development
of civilizations throughout the centuries. The unique opportunity to take
control over great commanders and important historical personas such as Joan of Arc or Genghis Khan, which can not only entertain the player but also work as a source of information.
Yet the gameplay is not
very realistic due to countless inconsistencies, the game’s historical theme as
well as the detail that was put into the game in order to make each
civilization as real as possible and have the opportunity to watch two empires battle
each other even if it never took place in history. Nevertheless, Age of Empires
proved to be a very successful war game
series published for the first time in 1997 and selling millions of copies
until present day.

Since his first appearance in 1981, Donkey Kong game and for over thirty two years Mario's characters has been seen in over 200 hundred games. Today Mario is considered to be a franchise, selling all sort of gadgets, toys and also appearing in media; e.g. movies, music etc.
In order to make sure their game scores huge sales, Yamauchi had an idea to make his game based on a already popular in America character. It happened to be that Popeye: movie adaptation was coming out on cinema screens, and Shigeru Miyamoto had transferred and modified popular from the Popeye the sailor comic characters in to his game.
Mario
One of the
most recognizable character in the gaming industry, since the nineteen eighties
and so profitable it became a franchise. Mario is an Italian plumber with
mustache, designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, staff artist at Nintendo Co ltd. The
story of Mario games was pretty simple and the gameplay addictive, as the first
Mario games were released on Nintendo Entertainment System which consisted
cartridges, which were gaming cassettes that couldn’t handle as much memory as
todays blu ray discs. Back in the 1980, when 16 bit games ruled the market and
Japanese gaming industry, Nintendo has released their biggest hit so far,
‘Radar scope’, which was an imitation of the classic arcade game, Space
Invaders.
After
Nintendo decided to set up an American branch, (NOA – Nintendo of America) and
start selling their Japanese hit, Radar Scope, which had not been so successful
and left NOA with over two thousand unsold units.
It was due the competition, and found itself amongst arcade kings such as Atari or Namco developers, Radar Scope was unsuccessful and Nintendo of America desperately and quickly needed a game that would take out the competition and bring huge profits.
The president and CEO of Nintendo, Hiroshi Yamauchi, has found a solution and hired Shigeru Miyamoto, who worked as a staff artists at the time for Nintendo Co. Ltd.

This
resulted in the creation of Donkey Kong game where the players are on a mission
to rescue a damsel in distress who is Jumpman’s girlfriend captured by his
mistreated pet, ape Donkey Kong.
The three
main characters of Popeye: the sailor were modified so that they would fit into
Shigeru Miyamoto’s game idea, the antagonistic brute, Bluto became a giant ape,
Donkey Kong, which means ‘stupid gorilla’, as Miyamoto stated in the interview
for Nintendo Online Magazine.
The Olive Oyl which is the girl Popeye falls in love with, became the Lady captured by Donkey Kong and Popeye was transformed into carpenter, also referred to as Jumpman.
